Tea for what ails you

June 8, 2014

Who gets sick in June? After surviving the coldest winter on record with nary a sniffle, I'm sick now? When it's close to 80 out, and the farmers' market is beckoning? Really?

Usually, a little zinc therapy does the trick. The minute I feel a little tickle in my throat, I start on the zinc and those germs do a 180.

Unfortunately, I had to pull out the big guns this time . . .

I've found that the original Werther's hard candies are the best for soothing a sore throat, and this Zevia ginger ale is a nice alternative to Vernor's. It is zero calorie, but made with stevia, an all-natural sweetener. If you're not familiar with Vernor's, it was an original, made-in-Michigan ginger ale that was our go-to when I was growing up and anyone was sick.

But, of course, a big cuppa is the most comforting thing when you're sick. And who better to be with you when you're in need of comfort but Pooh?

I usually prefer black teas, but a soothing herbal with some honey is called for today.

Perfect Peach with a perfect peach . . .

Isn't it funny . . . How a bear likes hunny?

Three cheers for my husband who did laundry, went to the grocery store, did some yard work, and made dinner. Meanwhile, I camped out here . . .

I really can't complain.

Linking with these lovely parties . . .

  1. Oh my word, Deborah - I am so sorry you have a "summer" cold. You absolutely sure it isn't severe allergies you've developed?

I had no idea Vernor's originated in Michigan - that's NEAT! (I originated in MI too!) LOL

I am praying for your quick recovery! I like you are pampering yourself, and your hubs is earning his wings. Hugs. GET WELL SOON!

  2. Summer colds are supposed to be worse than the curse of a winter one! I hope you are feeling better soon Deborah. I think that the unprocessed honey I have in my tea each afternoon is one of the reasons I rarely get a cold any more. (fingers crossed) Thank heavens for a hubby that pitched in and has allowed you to recuperate on the couch.

  3. You poor thing. Now off to bed and stay there for three complete days. I am quite certain you chose your husband well and he is completely capable of running the household and looking after you. The world will not fall down in three days and you need complete rest for a good recovery. A nice long extension lead for the TV and your laptop. A pile of your favourite DVDs. Some light reading material, aka cozy mysteries. Fruit. Some sort of anti-inflammatories to help you fight the germs. Maybe some nail polish and some face masks. Maybe some eye creams or foot creams. Rest. Rest. Rest.

  6. Thank you so much Deborah for dropping by my blog:))) I always love to meet new people :)

Sorry to hear that you are unwell - whenever I am sick I always reach for that cup of tea, it seems to make you feel better. It is winter here, so getting sick in June is not at all unusual for us!! But I can remember getting the flu in December on year - it was a really hot week and I was really hot with fever and that wasn't the best combination. Love the flowers on your tray - that helps any illness:))

    Get well soon.

  7. Being sick when the weather outside beckons you to play is crummy. I think you have hit on the best way to ease your discomfort though, and like you, tea is my go to medicine when I get the cold or the flu. I hope you're feeling better today.

It is a small world. I am originally from Dearborn, Michigan born and raised. We moved with job transfers and for the last 18 years living in North Texas and West Texas for 7 before this and other moves. We are here to stay now and love it. Most of our family still live in Michigan and we get back as often as we can.

Hope you feel better. Take care.

  16. Awww hope you feel better soon, Deborah! I am very familiar with Vernor's. My Dad grew up in St. Clair and he always loved it. My late beloved hubby loved it, too. Your tea looks comforting and just peachy!! Take care. xo

  21. Hello Deb! Looks like you have everything you need for an afternoon of rest. Love the sweet Pooh cup and saucer- so charming. I rarely drink soda and had not head of Zevia drinks. Nice that there is an alternative to artificial sweeteners for those who don't take sugar. I keep stevia in the house for guests! Feel better soon :)

  26. Sorry you've been under the weather! I hate colds, and you are SO right, that they come (inexplicably) in the warmer weather. What's with that? Glad you have so many good remedies. I personally go for nightly, large doses of Nyquil (or the knock-off brand). Then I sleep, and then I seem to get well.
