An old-fashioned Sunday

August 16, 2015

Today I attended worship in this beautiful old church. No air conditioning, no electric guitars, no overheads or speakers, just lovely people and wonderful old hymns. Beautiful.

Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Petosky, Michigan
We even sang this old favorite:

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

It was balm to the soul.

  1. Praise be - how awesome.

I get such a kick out of those sweet old simple country churches. : - )

I went to one on Cape Cod once and never forgot it.

  2. It sounds like the perfect church Deborah - like coming home.
Some of the "new" churches are more like sports stadiums and their services are "staged events".
I love the familiar old hymns too.

  3. Most of them that are neighborhood churches are simple around here, singing without music, just the Sunday by the worshippers.
I loved this post, you always share such lovely posts that hit the heart.
    Have a sweet week.

  7. Dearest Deborah,
You were lucky for having such a nice and quiet little Church.
I missed Church today because I was having severe mid-back pain. A couple of days and I know it is from working a bit too hard for getting everything ready and the entire home in tip-top shape before my Etiquette Class on Saturday. It paid off but I went back to bed after breakfast this morning; much needed rest and sleep.
    Sending you hugs,
    Mariette

  9. I love these old wooden churches. Although the new praise and worship songs are good, I do miss those old hymns we sang in church as I grew up.
    Have a blessed week!

  12. Aww what a beauty Sunday in worship you must have had. That church is gorgeous, and the Old Rugged Cross~ one of my all time favorites.
I sang that precious hymn with a few of the ladies in the church I was attending for an Easter service just after I gave my life to Christ many many years ago, so it holds a special place in my heart.
Thank you for sharing with us.

    Have a wonderful week.
    Much love~ Debbie

  14. What a beautiful church. My parents went to a little church like this. Love this old hymn. It is one of my favorites to sing and play on the piano. So nice to catch up today. I'm getting back from some time away from the computer and so nice to start the new week visiting you.
