Battening down the hatches

November 1, 2014

We had our first snow Halloween night.

So today, the deck chairs were cleaned and stored. The pots of fading flowers were upended in the woods. The geranium and lobelia, still blooming, were spared, and are adjusting to indoor life. My wind chimes, happy and sunny in the summer and wild and restless in the fall, are silent, hanging lonely in a closet.

The wood is stacked.

Our pantry is being stocked, in preparation for the holidays and blustery winter storms.

The smells of pumpkin bread, bubbling stew, and apple crisp bring us close around the table, as darkness settles.

We light candles and build a fire; it's time for gathering around hearth and home.

  5. Dearest Deborah,
Oh my, snow for Halloween night... Here it is now 32°F as I write this. Supposed to freeze early morning as that is the most vulnerable time. Pieter did bring the most tender pot plants inside the greenhouse, quite a job each fall. Tomorrow again frost is expected. Crazy week with almost 90s on Monday and now frost!
    Stay cozy around your hearth.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  6. Cozy I like, cold, dark and bleak outdoors not so much. As I write this, our temp is 33° (feels like 24 according to wind chill). We are situated near a river, so our valley stays a bit warmer than the hills, but we have the final chore of turning off outdoor water supplies today. Funny, I put my chime out in the garden once it's all put to bed. Enjoy the warmth of hearth and home, Deborah.

  7. I got our patio and backyard things away a couple of weeks ago (which is rare, I usually leave it till there's a need for gloves and scarves!). We also had snow yesterday morning! Not happy to see it flying so early. Your home sounds so snug and inviting with fire/cat/books :) Enjoy your reading. Wendy x

  9. Yes, it's time to gear up for the season ahead. I was imagining all the wonderful scents from cooking and baking at your home and have started making a different kind of soups myself each week to warm us from the cooler temperatures.
Reading by the fire sipping tea is something I look forward to this month.
