Victory!

November 5, 2014

So proud of our son, who has worked tirelessly since last December as campaign manager for our local Michigan senator's re-election.

Only 21 years old, and trying to maintain his college work and other obligations, he has helped to re-elect a candidate in a heavily targeted battleground district.

Cupcake toppers I made for the victory party.
We celebrated the win at a victory party last night. There were several nail-biting moments as the results were coming in, but our candidate stayed in the lead the entire night, and we received the final numbers close to midnight.

Our son, grabbing a late-night snack, and checking results, precinct by precinct.

After victory was declared, and our senator thanked everyone for their support and help, it was a special moment to see our son lead all of us in a prayer of thanksgiving, and in asking for God's leading and direction for the next four years.

Ours had been designated a battleground district, and it was indeed a battle. The other side was heavily funded, and conducted an extremely negative campaign, throwing "everything at us but the kitchen sink," as our senator remarked last night.

In contrast, we ran a positive campaign, focusing on achievements and goals. Everyone involved in the grassroots efforts was hard-working and positive. It was wonderful to see the level of commitment by so many dedicated volunteers, whose efforts no doubt tipped the balance in our favor.

Our son with Senator Patrick Colbeck.
It is heartening to know that we still have people of integrity in politics.

This was a new experience for me; our dining room became campaign headquarters this summer with interns coming and going, my husband and I got to march in a parade and go door-knocking, and I wrote a letter to the editor, and worked as a poll challenger yesterday, all things I wouldn't have done if my son wasn't running this campaign.

I learned even more clearly how important it is to take our civic duties seriously.

As you all know, we have grave issues facing our nation. Let's pray for our leaders, no matter their party affiliation, that they are given wisdom for the task ahead.

  3. Dearest Deborah,
Instead of feeling tired, both as a Parent for sure you felt mighty proud around midnight! That cures all the tired feelings of so many evenings, days that you all worked. Indeed a BIG VICTORY for our great nation. Let us continue to pray that high morals and respect, for God and for human kind will be put back in place.
You are such a role model and you ought to be proud of your son!
    Hugs,

  6. Congratulations to all involved. Now do not stop being politically active. Keep writing those letters to the editor. Keep the messages on the minds of all your friends. All it takes to invite disaster is for people to turn a blind eye. Politics is everyone's business.
