Super short purple-y, yellowish gray hair

November 5, 2015

Ugh . . . I really don't want to post this picture of me with my latest haircut.

I probably took 20 selfies trying to find one I wanted to post. This still isn't it.
As you know, I've been trying to get rid of the hair dye and go natural. So many people told me not to do it, but I forged ahead anyway. Now, for the first time, I'm wondering if they were right.

I'm trying to tell myself it's the cut. We were trying to get rid of most of the rest of the blond that was looking so fake yellow next to the gray. Hence, the super short cut.

My hairstylist added a little purple to tone down the remaining blonde. It was supposed to wash out. So now I have gray, purple, and yellow. Lovely.

I'm hoping it will look better when it grows out a little. I've never cared for the spiky, shaved gray look myself. (Super easy to take care of, though!)

Maybe when it grows out a little, I'll have something like this . . .

Isn't she beautiful?

So what do you do when you hate your hair?

Smile. A lot.

My husband and I are taking ballroom dance classes. When we went Saturday, no one there said anything about my hair. It was obviously very different than it had been when they all saw me last. And you know how we are, ladies. The lack of a comment means they all hate it, right?

Well, I just smiled and had fun and enjoyed myself anyway, figuring a droopy, pathetic look wouldn't improve things. I ended up having fun. Just avoided looking in the full-length mirrors on all four walls.

I went to the grocery store later, and pasted a little smile on my face. Not a big, goofy one. Just a small one, as though I were secretly pleased about something. And you know what? That little trick -- "fake it 'til you make it" -- really works. I had a happy little time, all by myself.

I do hope that I will like this better when it grows out more. I really don't want to color it again after all this.

If I do stick with it, I think the color will look really pretty with this dress.

I got this for a family wedding coming up in the winter. I love this blue. Very hard to find.

After my hair grows a little, I will probably be ready to do a final hair post, showing the whole progression from bleached blonde to all natural.

Thanks for letting me share.

  1. I think your new hair cut looks really pretty. Brave going natural but better for your hair.
And look in those mirrors you look great.

  2. I think your hair color looks great. It's definitely natural and looks nice on you. You're a lovely woman. You will look wonderful in that blue dress.

I've never liked short hair. My mother made me have short hair until I met my future husband. When I met him and found out he liked long hair too, my hair was never short again. I've had it trimmed through the years and right now it's to the middle of my back and mostly silver. I got tired of coloring my hair.

I think the hard part for you now will be letting it grow to a lovely length just right for you.

Thanks for sharing this little part of your life.

  3. Don't be so hard on yourself, Deborah. You have lovely thick hair and the colour suits your skin colour. I think you look lovely.

  4. I am very olden and have had silver hair for a long time... somewhere in my sixties, I, too, had enuf with the blonde dye...so, I did the same thing, had my hair cut really REALLY short and went with the natural...
I LOVE IT...and you will, too, once you get all the blonde out and get used to your new look...silver hair goes with ANY color...you will be smashing...use a shampoo for SILVER hair and YOU WILL SPARKLE....promise ! :)

  5. Oh I agree with BJ. I think you look cute as a button and "smile a lot" is good advice for almost anything. My sister, four years younger than I, has had silver hair for nearly a decade. She is often complimented on her hair. I have never been comlimented on my silver streaky brown hair. LOL! That is a beautiful shade of blue.

  6. Well, Deborah, I love your hair, color AND style. You wear that smile, girl, and you'll exude every bit of confidence and beauty that lies beneath it. The women may be jealous - that can also be a sign of lack of a comment.
My husband and I are ballroom dancers! It was my transition from retiring from ballet, and he had been taking lessons for years prior (it was before we were a couple). As you've probably figured out, it is much harder for the guy to have to lead (what's hard for us women is to acquiesce to following, hahaha). Seriously, though, it was pretty easy for me with a ballet background. You two are bound to have many fun years of dancing together with it! Patience with him is key. :)

  7. Oh, Deb I think your cut and natural color is AWESOME!!! I really think you are ADORABLE!

Funny, my daughter is a hairdresser - just left, she just did my hair. Cover grey temples, do an all-over highlight - and I cut BANGS! Really short ones. Rest of hair is ridiculously long - had it cut 7 inches a couple months ago and it's again all the way to my bum. Anyway you look awesome and you have a sweet tiny face that looks great with a pixie cut. Seriously rethink this. And the "purple" tone does temper after a while- my daughter used it (called blue wash) when I used to be a honey blonde - way too warm for my tastes - it's GREAT to get more of a platinum grey versus an old-blonde grey. Love your hair and lovely smile. ♥♥♥

  9. You look gorgeous Deborah and you have been such an inspiration to me here in Australia. I was 65 this July 4 and realised I had been colouring my hair for 50 years - enough is enough! I am having cuts more often and my dear hairdresser thinks the last colour should be gone from the front at least by the end of the year. I am really looking forward to wearing different colours such as that beautiful blue.

  10. You, are looking what I call smashing! Dance and smile till your days and nights overflow with all the love and memories. I had a grand daughter ask me one time many years ago when I still colored my hair was this; Grandma, why don't you have gray hair? Because real Grandmas have to have gray hair...
I think your hair needs some gray Grandma... Went with her advice and yes it was really hard, but now I am glad...

  11. I really like your hair style...it has energy and is fresh and flattering and you look really beautiful.
I think you are being much too hard on your self.

  12. I embraced my gray 12 years ago, and have never regretted it...well, the transition period was a little tough, but leaving behind the cost and time of coloring was lovely. And I've grown to love my silvers, which are getting whiter every year; natural highlights! Your cut is edgy and works well with your face, and I just adore the color! I find going a little cooler and brighter (think silvery grays, cool blues and bright colors) works wonderfully with gray hair. Plus lipstick, of course, since the gray can wash out our skin tone. Enjoy!

  13. I agree with all the gals here! You look just great with your short spiky do. Enjoy it - you are nearly to your goal and I too think you will like the end result. I am in transition but my hair is very long. Last appointment with stylist was May 10th and I have quite the silver halo now. Actually I am enjoying the transition and the money in my pocket every 5 weeks :-) You will look beautiful in your blue dress Deborah! Will there be dancing at the reception for you to show off your newly acquired graces?

  14. Thank you all for your encouraging and kind comments. I feel lots better! You have really helped boost my confidence in my new look. You're the best!

  15. I think it is very cute, Deborah, especially with that adorable smile! It will look just like your inspiration photo in no time. You are going to look lovely in that blue dress to play up your beautiful eyes. You'll dance the night away feeling so lovely! xo Karen

  16. You look fabulous!!! Striking!!! I wish I could wear that great hairdo. I used to have my hair a lot like that ("she sighs wistfully"), but I had to give in and grow it. I have fine, very limp hair that refuses to do anything but lie flat, so a few years ago I grew it out and wear it in a bun... much lower maintenance. Just like my granny used to wear :). (hopefully the 2015 version, at least!)

  17. Your hair looks great! I was trying to see the purple-y-yellowish-gray hair you were talking about and couldn't find it! Short hair grows. That's a good thing if you want your hair longer. Thanks for sharing the process. Looking forward to the final hair post. I LOVE the blue dress. With silver hair, you'll be smashing!

  18. I think you look stunning with your cut and the silver & ice hair color is perfect with your coloring. Yes, that dress would be very flattering to your true God-given coloring.

BTW, have you happened to notice many current hot singers are donning silver & ice hair coloring , even those in their 20's ?

  19. I don't see any purple or yellow ! And I love it! You look absolutely gorgeous in this photo!

  20. I like your new haIr. It suits your confidence and your spirit. I am on the fence now 4 months with no color due to finances. It's rapidly growing out. I wish I had the spirit for short hair. It's adorable on you.

  21. Hi, Deborah! I don't see the yellow-purple colors you're talking about. Remember, any change is hard (even brushing your teeth a different way!). I think you look adorable. I have too many cowlicks to have really short hair, so it's chin length and requires styling all the time: I'd love to have a style like yours: great for showcasing earrings and so much easier to care for, in general. Enjoy your new look: there's a sophistication about it, yet also reflects a young, free spirit. Rosie @ The Magic Hutch

  22. I've had gray/white hair for years. When my shampoo which was supposed to prevent yellow turned it purple, my hairdresser used peroxide on it in a gentle solution to whiten the purple. Worked great! Your cut is very cute!

  23. I think you look really cute with your short cut!

  24. Hi Deborah, your hair is looking gorgeous. I love your selfie shot and the shorter cut is really cute. Not everyone can wear it but you really look great.
Love the blue lace dress. Just beautiful. You will look fabulous in that dress at the winter wedding.
    Have a wonderful weekend. xo

  25. Dearest Deborah,
You look cute and even mischievous! Love that short hair on you and the color will not take long for being all natural. Yes, that light petrol blue for the dress will go very stylish with your new you!
By the way, I love the first photo far better than that woman who looks artificial; your character shines through so beautifully.
    Sending you hugs,
    Mariette

  26. I like your hair and don't see the many colours - just the grey, and it is great!
I had my hair cut last week and let my stylist know I wanted something a little edgier. BIG mistake! What I said when I got home though, was, 'it'll grow' because there is just nothing else to do!

  27. Well, I for one, absolutely love your very short hair! I am a short hair cut loving person, especially for us...ehem...more mature women...lol! The color looks beautiful and I didn't notice the color purple...which is one of my favorite movies :) I think you look stunning, my friend.

  28. I had to speak up and say I think your hair is beautiful. Being gray myself, I guess I appreciate the natural look in other women too. I even like your haircut. And I don't think it looks old by any means. It will look so nice with the blue dress. In fact you will be surprised how much looks good with gray hair. My hairdresser tells me so many are coming in for gray hair (even if they are young) or to go natural. I hope you come to like it eventually! It works for senior discounts too. :-)

  29. You have such pretty blue eyes. I love the haircut and the texture of your hair but maybe it's the white top that's making you feel like you don't love it? I think if you were wearing a softer color--that blue dress, for example, you would like your hair better.

  30. Well I can't see the purple or the yellow in this shot. I think you look fantastic!! Maybe a little hair gel or mousse to settle the hair a bit, but the silver just looks right with your face colouring. My mom used to use a product called "Silk & Silver" and it would take away any yellowing she had in her hair and add a bit of depth. It looked nice. I really like this cut on you though, I think the short hair suits your pretty little face ;) And that dress??!! Gorgeous! I've always loved that colour (perriwinkle blue isn't it?), and you are going to look so elegant with the new dress and hair colour.
My own progress is so slow. Grey/black hair about four inches down from the top and fading brown hair below. My face is so round that the very short look doesn't look so good on me. I recently got a nice cut though, and my hairdresser is sympathetic although she doesn't have any solutions for the transition. I'm wondering if I'm going to hate it when it's all finished, but seeing how great you look now will keep me going!

  31. Deborah, I LOVE your hair and the style!!!!!! It doesn't look purple or yellow to me and it just looks super cute!! You are going to look so stylish in that pretty blue dress, with your pretty hair. And yes, a smile makes you and everyone happy!!! I love your sweet spirit and keep on dancing, girlfriend!

  32. I love it too! And it looks like we both have the same silvery hair. I like that mine is so light and not really gray. I know you'll love it after you've enjoyed the simplicity of it for awhile. I think we both look marvelous! heehee! I wouldn't go back to coloring it if someone offered to do it free! It's liberating!!! And I remember getting mine cut very short to get the last of the blond off too....it will grow fast! I promise! Hugs Diane

  33. Deborah, get your eyesight checked, girl. Your hair is beautiful, you are beautiful! I thought you were beautiful even when you had that helmet on your head in Hawaii! Please don't give up now, the hardest work is done. And you are going to be lovely in that blue dress!

  34. Hi Deborah, It's wonderful to catch up with you today. I adore your hair color and cut. As you know, I no longer dye my hair. I am so happy to be done with coloring! I, too, use the purple shampoo! The dress for the upcoming wedding in the periwinkle will be gorgeous with your hair.

  35. I love the hair. It looks great. I think with time and letting it grow out a little longer, you will love it too. I wore that color or maybe a shade lighter to my daughter's wedding. Everyone raved about it. Hang in there!!!

  36. I really like your hair and that dress will look fabulous. I've also stopped dying my hair and found that I need a lipstick to stop myself looking washed out. The problem for me is finding the right colour now as I never used to wear lipstick - have you found you need to change your make up colours to better suit your hair?
